'Know When to Fold 'Em,' Say Gerry and Kathy Boylan

Royal Oak has its fair share of lovebirds, so we decided to check in with a few of them before Valentine's Day and ask them to share relationship and date night secrets.

Today we take a closer look at what makes Gerry and Kathy Boylan so sweet.

How long have you been together?

Married 34 years. Met 34 years and 6 months ago.

What’s the secret to a successful and happy relationship?

Let's see: You have to be able to make each other laugh. You have to know when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em when arguing. We think that you have to start with thinking you were marrying way over your head to start and keep that feeling that you're the luckiest person in the world to have your mate love you. 

What famous couple do you emulate?

Hmmm....Well, the goal is reach Bill and Rita Boylan's (Gerry's parents) achievement of being married over 60 years, so, we'll pick them. They're famous to us! 

Why did you settle in Royal Oak, and how long have you lived here?

We've been in Royal Oak for 31 years together. Royal Oak is my hometown, so when I took a job in the area, it was a homecoming. 

What’s your favorite romantic night out in Royal Oak and why?

Date night for us usually includes dinner at the Town Tavern and a movie at the Main or Emagine Theatre and a walk through downtown Royal Oak and a visit to Barnes & Noble.  We did go to 526 Main Dueling Piano Bar recently and had a blast.
