Go Skateboarding Today - it's the Holiday!

Modern Skate offers free time at its skate park and lots of giveaways at its Woodward store to celebrate.

Free and fun is the name of the game today – the annual worldwide Go Skateboarding Day, which is being celebrated in style by in Royal Oak.

Modern is offering free "stuff" every hour at , including a Toy Machine skateboard deck. Skateboarders can also enjoy as free skating at , 1500 N. Stephenson Hwy., from noon-6 p.m. – a break from the usual $14 for three hours, said Monique Czarnecki, manager of Modern Skate & Surf.

"The grind heard around the world" was founded by the International Association of Skateboard Companies (IASC) in June 21, 2003, with a few simple skate sessions and barbecues around skateboarding’s unofficial capital of southern California, according to goskateboardingday.org. The day has grown into an official holiday for skateboarders as well as shops, skateparks and equipment and apparel manufacturers, with fundraisers, contests and demonstrations all over the world.
