Jaycee Freeze to Benefit South Oakland Shelter

Members of the Royal Oak Jaycees will be outside the entrance of Westborn Market collecting donations on Mar. 9.

The Royal Oak Jaycees will team up with Westborn Market March 9 for the Jaycee Freeze, an annual event to support the South Oakland Shelter (SOS) and raise awareness of homelessness.

Members of the Royal Oak Jaycees will be outside the entrance of Westborn Market, 27659 Woodward Ave. in Berkley, from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. collecting donations and selling hot beverages, with all proceeds going directly to SOS. In addition to monetary donations, the Jaycees will also collect much-needed cleaning supplies and toiletries for the shelter’s clients.

Established in 1985, SOS partners with 67 church congregations to operate a rotating shelter system that houses and feeds the local homeless population. SOS aims to help individuals and families break the cycle of homelessness and live independently. The organization works with a diverse range of clients and focuses on homelessness prevention, sustainable housing solutions and career development.

"We are so grateful to the Jaycees for their dedication to raising awareness about homelessness in our community, and thankful for the funds that they raise to help reduce the impact and prevalence of homelessness,” said SOS Executive Director Ryan Hertz.
