Kids Club Live Draws Big (Little) Crowd

Families with young kids came out in swarms to play games and meet their favorite characters on Detroit Public TV at the Royal Oak Farmers Market.

Detroit Public TV's Kids Club Live program was so successful last year, it took a leap of faith and doubled this year's program offerings at the .

The gamble paid off, as DPTV sold out all six sessions of approximately 600 tickets per session over two days. The program began Tuesday and continues today.

"Maybe next year we will have even more shows," said Fred Nahhat, director of on-air fundraising for DPTV and host of Kids Club Live.

For $10 each, attendees were able to watch a 20-minute singalong featuring Public TV favorite Barney, meet a variety of characters such as Curious George and Clifford, jump in inflatable bouncers, play games, make crafts and much more.

The target audience for the participating characters is 2-6 years old, Nahhat said, but they try to throw in games that will entice older kids every year, too.

"This venue works great because it's centrally located, we can have the show inside and other things outside. It's perfect," Nahhat said.

Robin Richardson,  who owns the Market Cafe within the Royal Oak Farmers Market, was thrilled to bring her 3-year-old daughter Hannah of Garden City to the event.

"They do a really nice job," Richardson said. "The kids can cut, color, play, make crafts, run, jump, whatever! And it's only $10!"

Carol Schaal of Rochester, who brought her 2-year-old grandson Evan, appreciated that Tuesday's events were very well organized and there was plenty to do.

"Evan has enjoyed everything," Schaal said. "Especially Barney."
