VIDEO: Meet Your Best Friend at the Zoo

A wonderful pet is waiting for you at the Detroit Zoo this weekend.

The parking lot was the scene of plenty of wagging tails on Saturday as hundreds of dogs, cats, puppies and kittens waited to meet their new best friends at the Detroit Zoo.

at the zoo is the nation’s largest off-site companion animal adoption event. Presented by Purina One and supported by PetSmart Charities, the event continues 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Sunday in the zoo’s front parking lot beneath the landmark water tower. There is no charge for admission or parking for the adoption event. Regular admission and parking fees apply for those visiting the zoo.

There were hundreds of big and small, old and young dogs, along with cats and kittens, looking with longing eyes through their cages at the passers-by Saturday. More than 20 groups were on site with their animals ready to be adopted.

Last year, found homes for 449 animals. Since the event’s inception in 1993, more than 17,000 dogs, cats and rabbits have been placed into new homes at the spring and fall events.
