News from the Pews: Blessings, Bikes, Bible School

St. Paul Lutheran Church to host free community event after the Memorial Day parade.

If you plan to attend the Memorial Day Parade in Royal Oak on Monday, you’ll want to head over to after the festivities. The church will host “The Blessing of the Bikes: Gear Up for Summer,” a free community event, beginning at 10:45 a.m.

St. Paul Lutheran Church is a short walk from the conclusion of the parade by . 

“So many folks are downtown, looking for something to do after the parade,” explained Vicar Trevor Sutton, who helped coordinate this event.

The free event will be hosted in the St. Paul Lutheran parking lot, which is at the corner of South Main and Sixth streets. There will be 1,000 free hotdogs, plus chips, beverages, craft activities for children and more.

“We’re prepared to cook more hot dogs if needed,” Sutton said.

The “Blessing of the Bicycles” will begin at 11:15 a.m., and will continue every 15 minutes throughout the event.

“It’s not just bikes that we’re blessing. All other ‘wheeled’ means of transportation can be blessed,” said Sutton, extending the invitation to those who travel around town on roller blades, skateboards, scooters and more.

In an effort to recognize military veterans, those attending this event will have the opportunity to sign T-shirts, cards and notes that will be sent along with care packages to service members serving overseas.
