Viewfinder: Detroit Zoo Suffers Damage From Storm

Zoo workers work overtime to keep the animals safe and secure after Saturday's storm left damage.

The Detroit Zoo remained open Sunday and continued cleanup after Saturday evening, and rendering some of the picnic areas unusable for the day.

Beginning at 6 a.m. Sunday, crews worked diligently to clear paths and get power back up to the exhibits so zoogoers could still enjoy the attractions.

"Most important is that the animals are safe and we have backup power at the animal hospital,” said Dujuan Jones, grounds supervisor.  "We have generators available for every area when needed."

Deanna Greer, 10, of Almont wasn’t going to let anything get her down as she eagerly awaited seeing the Dinosauria exhibit. “As long as it’s open, nothing else matters,” Greer said.

The Wild Adventure Simulator was up and the train was running again by 12:15 p.m.
