Pre-Exams Set for Home Invasion, Car Theft Suspects

Home invasion suspects Scott Overfield and Jessica Squarcia ordered to be back in court June 10; Devone Winbush and John Sidney Freleigh on June 14.

Two suspects in and another in in Royal Oak were in  on Friday while another was a no-show.

, 22, of Southfield met her bond of $5,000 on Thursday after being arraigned on a stolen property charge related to . Squarcia’s court appointed attorney, Starla D. Zehr, was in court but Squarcia was absent. It was later determined there was confusion with her preliminary exam date, so a new date was set for June 10.

Prosecuting attorney Madonna Georges handled the pre-exams for Squarcia and 20-year-old , who remains in custody on first-degree home invasion charge.

Squarcia and Overfield were in Berkley on May 27, wanted for retail fraud at Walmart on Maple in Troy, and turned over to Royal Oak in connection with the home break-ins near 13 Mile and Greenfield.

Overfield’s court appointed defense attorney, Judith Gracey, was unable to negotiate Overfield's $10,000 bond. He is to appear in court again for a pre-trial on June 10.

, 21, of Southfield was charged with second-degree home invasion. Charesa Johnson stood in for Winbush’s court appointed attorney Raymond Correll. There was no change in bond, which stands at $20,000 and his pre-trial was set for June 14 at 9 a.m.

Police believe Winbush,  and Overfield are responsible for a spike in home break-ins and property theft in the city.

Sarah Greene was the present prosecuting attorney for Winbush and , 20, of New Haven. Freleigh and Winbush were held in custody until their pre-exams.

Freleigh’s defense attorney Robert Farnette negotiated a change from a $5,000 cash bond to a personal bond. His pre-trial for auto larceny is scheduled for June 14 at 9 a.m.

early Tuesday morning after a brief chase near Donald and Bauman avenues in the city's midsection after Royal Oak police received a report of thefts from vehicles. 

The officers also found a backpack the Bauman Avenue complaintant said he saw one of the suspects carrying. The backpack contained stolen property from other cars that had been broken into in the area. Some of the items recovered were a portable GPS unit, cell phones, cell phone accessories and an undisclosed amount of money.
