Royal Oak Residents Invited to Brainstorm Regional Bike Routes

Six communities have been asked to help create a biking map from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Royal Oak Public Library.

Berkley residents are invited to participate in a six-community meeting Wednesday in Royal Oak to discuss ideas for safe, regional biking routes.

The meeting will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the ; residents from Birmingham, Clawson, Ferndale, Pleasant Ridge, and Royal Oak also are encouraged to attend.

"We are collecting safe biking routes into one large regional biking map. With help from the Oakland County mapping department we will collate the data and publish this map sometime in the spring of 2012," says an event posting on the Royal Oak Non-Motorized Transportation Plan page on Facebook. "... This event is a joint project of the Royal Oak Environmental Advisory Board and environmental advisory boards in Berkley, Birmingham, Clawson, Ferndale, and Pleasant Ridge."

Woodward Avenue Action Association Executive Director Heather Carmona  replied that she plans to attend.

"I'll be there to see how WA3 can assist and include your effort in our efforts for a regional Woodward Complete Streets plan," she wrote.

The  nationwide Complete Streets initiative aims to protect bikers and pedestrians who share the road with motorized vehicles.

"On Aug. 18, the Oakland County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution in support of a Complete Streets transportation model for the county," according to a report on candgnews.com.

Communities including Berkley, Ferndale, Clawson, Novi, Oxford and Oakland Township also have adopted Complete Streets resolutions or ordinances.
