UPDATE: Severe Storms Watch Canceled

Mid-day thunder and heavy rain was just a precursor to more severe weather this afternoon and this evening, weather service warns.

Monday's storms rolled out just about as quickly as they rocked in, with the National Weather Service canceling the severe thunderstorm watch just before 7 p.m.

The storms left behind a few scattered power outages throughout the city, according to DTE Energy's power outage map. About 20,000 customers were without power throughout southeastern Michigan, DTE reported.

The weather service had warned that numerous thunderstorms could produce hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter and winds up to 70 miles per hour. "There is also the potential for isolated tornadoes," the NWS said Monday afternoon. "Heavy rainfall and localized flash flooding is also possible."

By midday, the area was doused by a heavy downpour with some hardy thunderclaps. The scenario was repeated several times during the day.

Monday's severe weather is part of the same system that triggered a huge tornado Sunday in Joplin, MO, where the death toll was reported at more than 100. The low-pressure system is expected to continue through Saturday, bringing rain and temperatures in the 60s all week, the weather service said.
