Veterans Day: What's Open, Closed and Discounted

Post office and banks are closed, while a ceremony is planned at the Veterans War Memorial Plaza in downtown Royal Oak.

Today we observe Veterans Day — a day dedicated to thanking the men and women who have served in the military. Congress established the national holiday on June 4, 1926. A national holiday such as this means many establishments will be closed while some area businesses are offering discounts to veterans.

At 11 a.m., the Royal Oak Memorial Society honors veterans at the Veterans War Memorial Plaza next to the library. The ceremony will include guest speakers and the Children's Choir and students performing taps.

  • Parking at metered spots in downtown Royal Oak is free today.

  • 7-Eleven: The convenience store chain salutes active, veteran and retired U.S. military personnel and their immediate families with free small Slurpee drinks between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.
  • Chili's: From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., veterans and active duty military can eat free at a participating Chili's when they dine in from a limited menu.
  • (41 S. Main St. in Clawson): 10 percent off any purchase for veterans.
  • Applebees (1275 W. 14 Mile Rd. in Madison Heights): Veterans and active duty military eat free from a limited menu.
  • Outback Steakhouse (1515 W. 14 Mile Rd. in Madison Heights): Veterans and active duty military get a complimentary Bloomin’ Onion and non-alcoholic beverage.
  • (591 W. Big Beaver in Troy): The restaurant will have a buy one, get one free special for veterans Friday-Monday.
  • (2950 Rochester Rd. in Troy):  All veterans and active military eat free. There will be a special Veterans Day menu with the free entrees.
  • Home Depot (660 W. 12 Mile Rd. in Madison Heights): The store will offer a 10 percent discount to veterans.
  • Build-a-Bear Workshop (Somerset Collection): Members of the armed services receive a 20 percent discount on any one transaction Friday-Tuesday.
  • (1659 Rochester Rd. in Troy):  15 percent off total sale in honor of Veterans Day.
