Video: Community Honors Memorial Day with Parade, Service

Royal Oak residents and visitors show appreciation for veterans and the beautiful day.

With picture perfect weather as the backdrop, hundreds of people lined Main Street for to honor U.S. war veterans.

Mayor Jim Ellison, Sen. John Pappageorge and Oakland County Commissioner Dave Woodward were delighted with the turnout and community involvement – not to mention the weather.

Richard Reyhl – a 94-year-old World War II veteran – said the parade "means a lot." He added, "I have so much respect for all the veterans."

At the Memorial Day service that followed the parade, Daniel Connolly, 24, of Madison Heights as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps 

Connolly, who starts his twice-weekly training runs at the Veterans Memorial in the plaza across from the library, thanked veterans groups and residents of Royal Oak. "They did a very wonderful job of making this a very special day for me and my family," he said.

The city's new Civil War monument also was unveiled during the service.
