Viewfinder: Classic Bicyclists Show Pedal Power In Royal Oak

Enthusiasts enjoy each other, their bikes and a ride on Thursday nights.

Walking through downtown Royal Oak on Thursday "bike night," the roar of motorcycles traveling Main Street is common. Mixed among the speed demons you might find  a quieter and older two-wheeler, like a 1963 Schwinn Corvette or a 1940 Elgin.

Bicycle enthusiasts from all over Metro Detroit gather in front of Lily's Seafood in downtown Royal Oak to meet friends, check out other bikes and maybe get a free repair on a tire or handle bar.

"It doesn't matter what kind of bike your riding or what year it is, everyone is welcome," said Jeff Prince, staff member of Lily's.

Every few minutes some of the enthusiasts hop on their bikes and ride around town.

"These are the bicycle hot rods," said Denny Norman of the Eastside Bike Shop in Center Line. Norman sets up a temporary bicycle stand to assist bike owners with simple repairs.

The group also hosts fundraisers. Last year it collected more than $1,500 for the Michigan Humane Society. This year it is supporting the Metro Detroit Police & Fire Pipes & Drums, a nonprofit that honors police officers and firefighters throughout the state who died in the line of duty.

Weather permitting, Royal Oak Bicycle Night is 6-10 p.m. Thursdays outside Lily's Seafood, 410 S. Washington.
