Keeping Bars Open Until 4 a.m. in Royal Oak? What Do Candidates Think?

Candidates for Royal Oak City Commission just say "no" to 4 a.m. last calls.

There’s a bill being introduced in Lansing that could allow the sale of alcohol in bars and nightclubs in central business districts to be sold until 4 a.m.

Sen. Virgil Smith (D-Detroit), the sponsor of the bill (SB247), told MLIVE he's trying to work out a deal with the Michigan Municipal League to give local governments authority to give the green light for late night boozing.

Candidates just say "no"

When asked at a candidate forum Monday night if they would be in favor of lengthening by two hours the amount of time Royal Oak nightclubs could continue serving alcohol, the candidates served up these short replies:

  • Sharlan Douglas: No.
  • Diane Hargan: No.
  • Jeremy Mahrle: Not bars open until 4 a.m., no.
  • David Poulton: No, I would oppose that. There's no reason to extend it past 2 a.m. We've already seen some concerns at 2 a.m. To keep them open until 4 a.m. would just be problematic and would not be appropriate.

What do you think about keeping downtown bars open until 4 a.m.? Tell us in the comments.
