Political Sign Theft Can Carry Stiff Penalties

Campaign sign theft is common during election season, but those caught can face a hefty fine.

As Election Day draws near and the debate on who should be elected intensifies, theft of campaign signs supporting a candidate or measure is not uncommon, according to Royal Oak Police Lt. David Clemens.

Royal Oak police receive calls reporting the loss of political signs every election cycle, Clemens said.

The consequences of stealing signs can include a large fine or even jail time. Stealing or defacing signs is a misdemeanor that can carry a maximum penalty of a $500 fine or imprisonment of up to 90 days.
