3 Royal Oak High School Students Qualify for Regional High School Honors Choir

Three Royal Oak High School (ROHS) students have qualified to participate in the Michigan School Vocal Music Association (MSVMA) High School Regional Honors Choir. Auditions were held Oct. 12.

  • Kristen Dubicki, Freshman
  • Aurora Haziri, Junior
  • Camille Primeau, Senior

Students auditioned in front of one adjudicator by singing a memorized piece a cappella and sight-singing a short exercise.  Students were assigned a point score in the categories of tone, memorization, intonation, phrasing, diction and vocal technique.

ROHS Choral Director Deborah Buffa explains this is a much more difficult level due to the sight reading component. “There are many fine singers auditioning these days, but a music reader, that can sight read new music on the spot, is quite rare,” she said.

Sol-Feg is the sight reading language taught in Royal Oak Schools.

“Our goal at ROHS, is to produce vocal musicians that can not only sing with a strong and healthy voice, but also demonstrate musical literacy. I am passionate about the music reading component at ROHS. I really believe it is the main element that has made our vocal music program so successful - the music reading skills will last our students a lifetime,” said Buffa.
