The Roeper School’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Ceremony, Candlelight Walk and Vigil
The annual event, which has been held for over 25 years, will gather the local community together to honor and celebrate the ideals and memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The activities will begin at 5:00 p.m. at the Roeper Community Center, with a meal consisting of a variety of homemade soups and bread. Following the meal, at 6:15 p.m., the ceremony will begin in which reflections will be shared regarding the life and accomplishments of Dr. King. Poems will be read, songs sung and student and other community member presentations made. At approximately 7:15 p.m., candles will be distributed and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Candlelight Walk will begin its procession from the Community Center to Roeper’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Domes, built in 1969 in his memory. The group will enter the large circular Big Dome, at which time attendees of all ages can share their reflections about this great man, his impact on their lives, the world today and the work that still needs to be done.
