Downtown Dialogue Attracts New Participants

Introduction of "moratorium" and "recall" into recent civic/political discussion has attracted new participants in the downtown/alcohol dialogue.

Introduction of "moratorium" and "recall" into recent civic/political discussion has attracted new participants in the downtown/alcohol dialogue, both in Versagi Voice and in Patch. Coming somewhat late to this party, the newcomers are uncertain where in Versagi Voice to look for information they have been told about.

Newcomers and regular readers will benefit from a sort-of Table of Contents page which will provide links to related information which appears in diverse sections of the website. The page, titled "All Matters Downtown", contains such information as displayed in the 3-column table below.

A quasi-permanent link to the page will be kept under the Inside label at the top of this Home Page.

Debbie Campbell on Downtown Bars
We passed the point of a balanced mixed use downtown as prescribed by the Master Plan many liquor licenses long ago. Our downtown is not an “Entertainment District”, it is a “Drinking District". When you ask young people why they come to Royal Oak they don’t tell you they come to be to entertained. They tell you they come to Royal Oak “to get their drink on.” -- April 2012

Has Downtown Peaked?
Although VersagiVoice stresses that "there is more to Royal Oak than downtown," dialogue about the future of downtown has become fragmented  -- and somewhat antagonistic. Communication has deteriorated among retailer-focused groups, DDA/Main Street, City Hall, the Chamber of Commerce. VersagiVoice is devoting this segment of the website to provide focused attention on the consensual need to attract a broader range of merchants. -- 2004

Calls for recall are premature
Will this new burst of anger stay focused? How long will it last?

"Enough with the praise already!" and "Have you sold out?" are typical reactions of fellow-conservatives who are dismayed that I have not criticized the "all things alcoholic are good" crowd. They are especially angry that I agreed with Mayor Jim Ellison in praising CITCOM's handling of the Hamlin Corner matter. -- April 2012
