Position Paper

I love Royal Oak. I will always call it "home". From our beautiful and abundant parks to our bustling downtown area, Royal Oak has something for everyone. I believe, with the right guidance, Royal Oak has a very bright future. If our city commissioners are diverse in their interests and concerns, we could aptly represent the diversity in our Royal Oak citizens. In running for the city commission, I offer this diversity. As a bookkeeper, running the city within its budget is very important to me. As a licensed veterinary technician, I know how to prioritize and work as part of a team. And as one who has never held office before, I come with no agendas. As a city commissioner, I will seek positive resolutions to all controversial issues we face, and I will listen and learn from those with different opinions.

We all want a safe, clean, and properly functioning city. But, just as we manage our personal budgets, Royal Oak must meet the city's needs and commitments before considering those things that our citizens, business owners, developers or city officials want. As a city commissioner, I will look into what Royal Oak can afford before voting on any expenditures.

Voters will make a decision on November 5th as to whether or not we should adopt the proposed Human Rights Ordinance. I urge everyone to read the entire ordinance. Language such as "real or perceived discrimination" concerns me greatly. Who among us is truly capable of accurately determining another's perception. In addition, there are fourteen exemptions built into the current language. A law, or more narrowly an ordinance, should be able to stand without exemptions and be applicable to all. For these reasons, I will be voting NO in November. As a city commissioner, I will strive to properly educate myself and pass that information on to my fellow citizens so that we can make intelligent and informed decisions.
