Sept. 24 has been proclaimed Family Day - a day to eat dinner with your children - by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University.
This is a national movement was launched after decades of research found the more often children eat meals with their family, the less likely they are to smoke, drink or use drugs.
The Royal Oak Community Coalition has partnered with area restaurants, grocery stores and even a video store to offer discounts on Sept. 24 becuase it doesn't matter where the dinner table is, it is the closeness and support family members provide when sharing a meal and conversation.

Tips for Family Day
- Pre-plan the meal; use a recipe everyone enjoys
- Assigned jobs that contribute to making dinner; set the table
- Start conversations that everyone can contribute to; what was the best part of your day?
Solid relationships with parents are young people’s number one reason for NOT using drugs or getting involved in destructive activities. The time you spend now will benefit your family for a life time.
