CROP Hunger Walk: “Ending Hunger One Step at a Time”

This article is about the annual Church World Service sponsored CROP Walk. This years walk is May 5th, and sponsored by 7 local Royal Oak churches.

This year Royal Oak and some 2,000 other cities and towns nationwide are joining
together in interfaith community CROP Hunger Walks around the theme, Ending
hunger one step at a time”.
These walks are open to everyone and occur on various Sunday’s throughout the year. CROP Hunger Walks are community fundraising events sponsored by Church World Service (CWS), an international relief, development, and refugee resettlement agency.  Money raised by CROP Hunger Walks nationwide is used by CWS to provide food, medical care, disaster relief and self-help development for needy people around the world.

Royal Oak CROP Walks began in 1986, making this year’s walk the 28th Annual  walk. The 2013 Royal Oak CROP walk is scheduled for Sunday, May 5th at 1:30 pm, starting from First Presbyterian church (Corner of 6th Street and Hendrie Blvd.)  This year’s walk is sponsored by the following Royal Oak churches:

  • First United Methodist
  • First Presbyterian
  • Good Shepherd Lutheran
  • St John Episcopal
  • First  Congregational
  • Royal Oak Missionary
  • St Mary’s Catholic

Last year’s walk, with 9 Royal Oak area church sponsors, raised  $9,985. Each year 25% of monies raised by the Royal Oak CROP Walk are distributed to hunger-alleviating agencies in the Royal Oak area. The past 27 CROP walks have returned over $90,000 for distribution locally to fight hunger.
