International Women's Day: Celebrating the Women of AT&T

Celebrating the women of AT&T

At AT&T today, more than 90,000 women help lead a transformation in the way we connect with our world.  We are executives, engineers, marketers, sales people, finance leaders, attorneys – and mentors.  More than 16,000 of us are employed in science, technology, engineering and math jobs – and more than 26,000 of us run our network operations – which improve the way millions across the globe live their lives.

We are women like Marian Croak.

Marian is the first AT&T woman to receive more than 100 patents. She is one of more than 700 women named on AT&T patents. All totaled, more than 4,000 patents have been filed by AT&T women. Today she’s a senior vice president for the company, making decisions that impact millions. You can hear more of her story here.

But it’s not just STEM-educated women who innovate at AT&T. The Innovation Pipeline, possibly the world’s largest crowd-sourcing tool of its kind, gives every AT&T employee the opportunity to submit ideas for innovative products and services. To date, women have submitted more than 7,000 ideas, and in total, more than $27 million has been invested in TIP ideas.

One of those ideas came from Shavonne Jones, a union AT&T employee in Detroit. Shavonne knew AT&T was looking for ways to reduce texting while driving through our It Can Wait program. It was an issue that hit close to home; a good friend of hers had recently died in an accident caused by a texting driver. That tragedy inspired Shavonne to submit the idea for the AT&T DriveMode app, which generates an automatic response to incoming texts, letting friends know you are driving and unable to text back. It’s already been downloaded more than 180,000 times.

Marian and Shavonne are two of the women at AT&T whose ideas are helping shape our future. Because we have so many stories like theirs to tell, we created a page in our newsroom to celebrate the women of AT&T. I hope you’ll visit our new “AT&T Women of Leadership” page now and check back often to keep up with the women of AT&T.
