In a national ranking using U.S. Census, Royal Oak finishes in the top 10 among cities with more than 50,000 population.

NerdWallet drilled down into U.S. Census data in cities with populations of more than 50,000 to put together its ranking, which is based on housing costs, median income, commute times and other factors important in single-parent households.

The data also included statistics from Kids Count, which shows there are 25 million children who are primarily cared for one parent.
