Attention Golfers: Jess Perreca Sr. Memorial Christmas Classic Set for Sept. 9

The Royal Oak Christmas Classic – now known as the Jess Perreca Sr. Memorial Christmas Classic – charity golf tournament returns on Sept. 9 for the 30th year.

One of the longest running charity golf tournaments in southeast Michigan takes place right here in Royal Oak every September. The Royal Oak Christmas Classic, now known as the Jess Perreca Sr. Memorial Christmas Classic, has raised thousands of dollars to provide support for more than 200 needy families and 75 seniors at the Holiday Season.

According to Jack Salter, the idea for the golf tournament began with Fran Stocker – father of former mayor Robert Stocker – and a gentleman named Jon O’Connell, who back in 1982 decided to find a way to raise money to help needy kids at Christmas. A year later, Jess Perreca joined the cause and spearheaded the gathering of donations and distribution of baskets. Soon after, Tom Violante and his teamed up with a matching canned food drive that has become an integral part of the program. Jack says that the first year they helped approximately 23 needy families.

The original Christmas Classic quickly became a popular event with many celebrities, including former Detroit Tiger Bill Freehan and local radio and TV personalities, participating.  I can remember the cars were lined up along 13 Mile with Royal Oak’s Finest directing traffic in and out of the golf course all day long. Another memory I have was the Christmas tree located in the Royal Oak Golf Club clubhouse all summer with pledge envelopes for donations and sponsorships.  Everybody in town marked their calendar for the big day and the turnout was fantastic – a complete sellout with a waiting list. If you were an elected official or running for office it was a must event. Best of all, everyone had a great time as more and more families were able to enjoy a special holiday gift.

Over the years, due largely to the economy and increased competition from other charitable events, it has become a challenge for the Classic to maintain the level of giving. Then just a few years ago we lost Jess to a battle with cancer. His loss was immeasurable, but three years ago at the suggestion of Brett Tillander, current director of the , the event was renamed in Jess Perreca’s memory and now we have seen renewed interest and growth. Jess would be very proud.

So mark the date for this year’s Christmas Classic – Friday, Sept. 9 at the Royal Oak Golf Course. The entry fee is only $75 per golfer and tee/green sponsorships are available. If you cannot attend, any donations, door prizes as well as program ads are welcome. Information is available at the Royal Oak Golf Course or by calling 248-544-4166 ext. 127. Or you can send me an email at mikrip@wowway.com and I will make sure you receive a registration form.
