Clubs and Groups Benefit from the Woodward Dream Cruise!

The Woodward Dream Cruise provides fundrasing opportunities for local clubs and charities.

As I did my annual walking tour of the Dream Cruise attractions at 13 Mile Rd and Woodward, I stopped to visit with a few of our local clubs and groups that benefit from the event.

My first stop was the Kiwanis booth at their usual location near Firestone facing Woodward Ave. There I found good friend Margaret Monroe and her fellow Kiwanians doing a brisk business selling official Dream Cruise tee shirts, caps, pins , mugs and other items. I spoke with John Miller ( Reverend Miller to many ) who filled me in. According to John this is the biggest fundraiser for their club and they have been participating since 1996. Over twenty volunteers staff the booth from Friday night through all day Saturday and the profits go to support the Kiwanis Club efforts with the RIF program at the Library, Children’s Miracle Network, Special Olympics and the Boys and Girls Club.

Speaking of the Boys and Girls Club, I stopped by to visit with Shannon Jovic who was coordinating the volunteers staffing the parking lot at the Northwood Center. Shannon said that they had been providing the organization and staffing all week long making sure that this busy area ran smoothly while raising monies for The Boys and Girls Club, Beaumont Children’s Hospital and The Children’s Miracle Network. Selected club members, friends of the B & G Club, Optimist Club Members and staff from Beaumont made up most of the volunteers.

I did not make it down to 12 mile and Woodward this year but I know that the big tent in the parking lot at The Shrine of The Little Flower Elementary School is an annual fixture for the Dream Cruise. The volunteers sell official Dream Cruise merchandise and serve delicious food for the cruise fans as they pass along this busy intersection. They also sell parking spaces in the lot behind the school and at the High School on 13 Mile Rd. Proceeds go to help support Parish activities.

Besides being our “Uniquely Detroit “ annual tribute to the auto industry’s best efforts of muscle and style from a different era, it is good to know that there are benefits for several worthy causes from our Dream Cruise.

In spite of the stormy weather late on Saturday, it was another successful Cruise. See you next year.
