Royal Oak citizens have organized as the Friends of Royal Oak Schools to urge their neighbors and friends to support the school district sinking fund millage proposal that will be on the Nov. 6 ballot.
The Friends committee will hold a fundraising event at Sangria on Sept. 30 from 4 -7 p.m.. Minimum donations of $25 will admit persons to the event which will include appetizers and a cash bar.
Persons who are not able to attend the fundraiser but who desire to support the Friends of Royal Oak School may do so by sending donations to: Friends of Royal Oak Schools, 2214 Ferncliff Ave, Royal Oak, MI 48073.
The sinking fund proposal is for a 10 year 1-mill sinking fund. The request is timed to coincide with a reduction in the district’s debt millage. This will result in a net impact for taxpayers of 0.39 mils or $26.80 per year for the average Royal Oak homeowner. The sinking fund provides dedicated revenues that by law may only be used to make improvements to school buildings. The passage of the sinking fund will allow the district to address critical school facility needs.
“As a parent of students in Royal Oak schools, I can testify to the importance of this issue. I urge the community’s support.” Allison Sykes, Friends of Royal Oak Schools chairperson.
