Community Corner

Goodbye world famous Elie Wine Pt. II etc.

I was informed just before Peets bowed out supposedly because the landlord wanted them to pay for code corrections discovered during renovation (4th and Main). Cold Stone who coveted that corner was to move and take over Elie Wine.
A rent hike was soon followed by a notice to vacate and he is now on his way to Birmingham where I believe he would be in a better position as an estate wine broker anyway.
Stop in and grab a bottle of class before its too late. Each bottle looks like it belongs on the seat of a Bentley and would make a great gift. Thanks Judy for the update that Elie will be opening in Birmingham May first.
Add that when the former Caribou' space is combined with former Eli Wine the landlord could sell it to a bar and according to my sources he is asking $35 a sq.ft. as where another business could maybe afford $16 (about the going rate before the exodus). The lower level of the closing Barnes and Noble is $42. Only gallons of alcohol PER HOUR can pay for that kind of rent!!(thanks Debbie). I would rather see Royal Oak in the hands of an EFM than see a wimpy commission cave in to a local lawyer threatening to sue the city for "taking" because it decided to put its foot down and place a moratorium on future downtown liquor licenses. Regarding bargain hunting developers this town needs to place a moratorium on ALL abatements that take services paid for by residents for up to twelve years now! RO is not some forsaken inner city for which TIFAs were designed for. Just say NO to any tifa abatement trade offs unless they bring in real jobs that can support real families as that is what they were designed to do!
