2011 Flashback: Royal Oak Slayings Shake Community

After two homicides in two months, police chief seeks to assure residents that Royal Oak is a safe community.

Two murders in Royal Oak in 2011 underscore a year of crime that has disturbed the public, including law enforcement.

on Dec. 13, Police Chief Corrigan O’Donohue told reporters the couple’s slaying of 80-year-old Nancy Dailey had affected his department, as well as the entire Royal Oak community.

“This is a rare occurrence,” O’Donohue said in a news conference outside the courtroom. “Royal Oak is a very safe community. The reason we are all here is because it is so rare.”

The chief said he did not want people living in fear but added that residents should take simple precautions.

The news of Dailey’s homicide came just two months after a 41-year-old Ranae Chupick was . Coincidentally, on that same day, a national crime report released by the FBI showed in 2010.

There was one reported murder last year. , 53, of Royal Oak was shot July 13, 2010, in his driveway and was pronounced dead at Beaumont Hospital.
