5 Reasons to Go to Royal Oak’s Citywide Block Party

The June 11 event is designed to make the community safer by bringing neighbors together.

“We think the citywide block party on June 11 at the Royal Oak Farmers Market is going to be a really great kickoff to a summer of great events here in Royal Oak,” said Scott Warheit, a member of Royal Oak’s Crime Prevention Council.

The event is an opportunity for the entire community to gather at the farmers market on Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. for food, fun and information.

Here’s five reasons why you should go:

1. It’s a family event. There will be plenty of things for kids to do, from mini golf to arts and crafts. Children will also have an opportunity to explore police and fire vehicles and meet McGruff the Crime Dog.

2. Grab a bite to eat. Come hungry because there will be food trucks, ice cream and Hollywood Market will be providing free water and soda for the event.

3. Learn about cool events. Find out what’s happening this summer at the Royal Oak Public Library and other venues around town. This will be a great opportunity for parents and youth to discover opportunities to stay active and safe this summer.

4. Get involved in the community. Families, singles and seniors are encouraged to meet and interact with Royal Oak Police and Fire, Department of Public Works, the judges from the 44th District Court, and the Royal Oak Community Coalition. The Royal Oak Animal Shelter will also be at the event with adoptable pets.

5. Rediscover your neighborhood watch program.
Learn about getting more involved in your neighborhood. “It's one of the things we want to put a very strong emphasis on,” Warheit said. “We want to reengage our neighborhoods and get our neighborhood watch programs up and moving again.”
