Royal Oak Police Looking for Owners of Stolen Tools

Car of Madison Heights man contained hand tools, small power tools believed to be stolen from Royal Oak vehicles and garages.

Royal Oak police have taken into custody a 33-year-old Madison Heights man believed to be involved in vehicle and garage break-ins. 

Anthony Michael Carroll has been charged with fleeing and eluding a police officer, a five-year felony, and driving while license suspended, a 93-day misdemeanor.  He was arraigned today at the 44th District Court before Magistrate Kenneth Roy. 

Caroll is believed to be involved in a series of early morning and daytime thefts that include hand tools, small power tools and gasoline from various residential locations, according Interim Chief Corrigan O'Donohue.

Police had their eye on Caroll Tuesday morning, O'Donohue said. Caroll was driving a blue Chevrolet Monte Carlo in the area of 11 Mile and Alexander.

"Officers attempted a traffic stop and he fled and a brief police pursuit ensued," O'Donohue said.

Officers ended the pursuit and began canvassing the area, finding the suspect's vehicle parked in the 500 block of Hawthorne. After a neighborhood search, Caroll was discover hiding in a nearby backyard.

"When we inventoried his car, we found several hand tools and small power tools," O'Donohue said.

Caroll admitted to stealing the tools over the past few days, but could not provide information as to exactly where the thefts occurred, O'Donohue said.

Royal Oak Police cannot match the recovered items with any police reports. 

"We don't know if residents just decided not to report the thefts, or if they have not noticed the tools missing yet."

Bond for Carroll was set at $10,000 with a 10 percent provision.
