Dead Royal Oak Man Owned Farmington Hills Home Destroyed By Fire

Randy Michael Bergeron, who lost his Farmington Hills home in a fire last year, died in Royal Oak Monday.

A 61-year-old Royal Oak man, who police say may have accidentally shot himself Monday, owned a home in Farmington Hills that was destroyed by fire last year.

Randy Michael Bergeron was found with his legally registered handgun next to his body. Cause of death was a gunshot wound, according to Royal Oak Police.

According to a court document posted online, Bergeron formerly lived on Ballantrae Ct. in Farmington Hills and owned a company called Century Truss.

Farmington Hills Fire Marshal Jason Olszewski confirmed Bergeron had a fire at his home in Farmington Hills on March 29, 2012.

Houses on Ballantrae are on larger lots; the short street is tucked into a subdivision located east of Drake and south of 12 Mile.

Farmington Hills Patch reported on March 29, 2012 a man who was the sole occupant of the home jumped from a second story window to safety, and no firefighters were injured. The call came in at around 2:19 a.m. Pockets of smoke still rose from the charred remains more than seven hours later.

WXYZ-TV reported that the owner of the home was awakened by his dog barking, and that the man suffered back injuries when he jumped. The dog also escaped the blaze from the second story, the station reported.

The cause of the fire remains an open investigation, according to Olszewski.

The Daily Tribune reports today that Bergeron was also named in a $4 million dollar lawsuit.
