Home Invasion Could Have Turned into Sexual Assault, Police Say

Royal Oak woman apparently scared off man who police say was waiting for her. Directions to woman's home, knife, duct tape and condoms found in suspect's car, police say.

A Royal Oak woman escaped a possible sexual assault when she scared off the man who police believe broke into her home and waited for her, said Thursday.

Officers responded to the 3600 block of Durham at about 11:20 a.m. Sunday for a call about a home invasion interrupted by the resident, police reports said.

The resident told police that when she arrived home she opened the front door and immediately noticed some items out of place. She said she walked to the back of the house to let her dog out and observed a man flee from her back porch area. The man got into a silver colored Monte Carlo and fled the scene, according to the report.

The woman sought the help of a neighbor and they called police. Royal Oak officers quickly responded, located the suspect vehicle and stopped it, police said.

"During our investigation, officers found a knife, zip-ties, a roll of duct tape, rubber gloves and condoms in the suspect's vehicle. The suspect also had a notebook with written directions to the victim’s home," Royal Oak Police Lt. Thomas Goad said in a release. "Based on the items we located and information gathered from our investigation, we strongly believe that the suspect broke into the home earlier in the morning and was lying in wait for the victim in order to commit a sexual assault."
