Home Invasion, Stolen Bike and Items Taken from Unlocked Cars

Here is a rundown of recent crime reports from the Royal Oak Police Department.

Here are highlights from reports through Thursday:

Switcheroo

A man told police at 12:05 a.m. April 15 that someone had stolen his Schwinn mountain bike from the and left an older bike in its place. The man said his bike was locked to a bike rack.

Taken from unlocked cars

  • At 8:30 p.m. April 15, a woman reported that someone had taken a Dell laptop computer out of her unlocked vehicle while it was parked in the driveway of her home in the 2900 block of North Vermont.
  • At 10:15 p.m. April 16, a man reported that someone took a cellphone from his unlocked vehicle while it was parked at Royal Oak .
  • At 12:45 a.m. April 17, a man reported that someone took a portable GPS unit, sunglasses and money from his unlocked vehicle while it was parked in the 800 block of Park.
  • At 9 p.m. Tuesday, a complainant reported that someone took a backpack containing two raincoats, his checkbook, some bills and two Motorola two-way radios out of his unlocked vehicle while it was parked at.

Attempted breaking and entering

Officers responded to a breaking and entering call at 4:30 a.m. April 16 in the 1700 block of East 11 Mile Road. A resident said he was walking in the area and saw an unknown person tampering with the back door of a building. When he heard the sound of breaking glass, he called police. According to police, officers checked the business and found that no one had entered the building but that a window had been smashed, and fresh pry marks were found on the door. The suspect was described to police as a man in a blue hooded sweatshirt.

Home invasion

A5 4:15 a.m. Sunday, a couple reported that when they returned to their home in the 3900 block of Hillside after being out of town, they found that someone had broken in through the back door. According to police, several jewelry boxes were stolen.

Stolen vehicle

A woman told police at 11:15 p.m. Wednesday that someone had stolen her gold 1999 GMC Yukon Denali from a parking lot in the 3800 block of Devon. The woman told police she had parked her car in the parking lot around 10 a.m. and found her vehicle missing at 11:15 p.m.

Homeowner helped

At 7:45 a.m. Wednesday, police arrived at a house in the 1900 block of Gardenia and were able to pry open the locked doors after a senior citizen had fallen inside her home. According to police, the homeowner got home from work and found that the deadbolt locks were fastened while his elderly mother was inside calling for help after she had fallen down. He called police for help. After police were able to get inside the house, the woman was transported to the hospital.

House baseball?

At about 8:15 p.m. Wednesday, police responded to a report that several young men carrying baseball bats had entered a foreclosed house in the 600 block of Oakland. When police arrived at the vacant house, they found four individuals walking around inside, according to the police report. The subjects were taken into custody for entering without permission. According to police, the vacant house had been ransacked over a period of time.

Retail fraud pursuit

At 1:10 a.m. Friday, police responded to a retail fraud in progress call at the CVS on Woodward Avenue. According to police, as the officers neared the store, they located a silver Ford Taurus leaving the scene with the two male suspects inside. The officers tried to stop the car near 13 Mile Road and Woodward Avenue, but the Taurus didn’t stop. Police pursued the car to the area of Southfield and 11 Mile roads when they stopped the chase. According to police, officers determined that the suspect vehicle was stolen and was involved in similar crimes in other cities throughout the past few days.
