Indecent Exposure and Knife-Wielding Roommates

Here is a rundown of recent crime reports from the Royal Oak Police Department.

Highlights from reports May 6-Thursday:

Knife-wielding roommate

On May 5, a complainant reported that he and his roommate got into a quarrel in their home on the 800 block of North Stephenson. According to the police report, the complainant's roommate became angry and grabbed a kitchen knife and began “parading around the apartment” before stabbing a wall, causing damage. The complainant told police the roommate then grabbed him from behind by the neck while still holding the knife. The roommate ran when the complainant was able to grab his cellphone and call police, the report said. He was not injured. Police found the roommate and arrested him on a charge of felonious assault.

Stolen bikes

During the past week, two bikes were reported stolen. The first bike, reported stolen May 5, was a purple 2011 L.L. Bean Sport Cruiser 7 bicycle parked in the 2300 block of Starr. On May 6, a woman reported that someone stole her red Trek bicycle from her front porch in the 1500 block of North Washington. In both cases, police noted the bike locks had been cut.

Home invasion

A woman reported to police May 5 that someone removed a screen from her window and attempted to enter her home in the 4000 block of Judson. According to police, the would-be intruder did not gain access. The same day, a resident living in the 3900 block of Parkview reported that someone forced his or her way into the home through a rear sliding door. Nothing appeared to be taken, police said.

Hold on to your keys

A man living in the 900 block of Etowah reported to police May 6 that someone stole his gray 2007 Yamaha motorcycle. The bike was parked in the garage with the key in the ignition.

K-9 finds laptop, suspect

Royal Oak Police assisted the Troy Police Department on May 6, tracking suspects wanted for breaking into cars. According to reports, Troy officers saw some suspects stealing from cars in their city when the suspects ran away. Troy officers then asked the Royal Oak Police Department for help from its K-9 unit to aid the search. The K-9 was able to lead police to a possible suspect’s home and also located a laptop computer that was hidden in some bushes along the way.

Heavy-duty stealing

A resident reported to police May 6 that someone had stolen a copper lawn urn from his yard in the 1200 block of South Lafayette. According to the resident, the urn was so large that it would have required two people to carry or someone with a dolly.

Road exposure

A woman called police May 6 to report that while she was driving in the area of 13 Mile and Campbell roads, a man driving an older-model, white four-door sedan had exposed himself to her. According to police reports, “the suspect pulled his vehicle alongside her vehicle twice as they drove down the road.” The suspect was described to police as a 45- to 55-year-old unshaven man with black hair. The vehicle may have had a sign with silver writing on the passenger-side door. According to police, the suspect vehicle also had scratches on the hood and passenger-side front side panel.

Sticky trouble

The Royal Oak parking supervisor reported to police May 6 that someone placed glue inside several parking meters and stole two drain covers.

Indecent view

On Sunday, two complainants reported to police that they saw a man expose himself in at Torquay and Leafdale. When police arrived at the park, they witnessed the act in a wooded area of the park, the report said. Police arrested the man and charged him with indecent exposure.

Messing around

A resident called police Sunday to report that someone had ransacked his recreational vehicle in the 5100 block of Elmhurst. The man said the suspect also attempted to light a fire inside a flower planter outside. According to police, nothing appeared to be taken.

Family visit gets physical

Police responded to the nursing home Monday after staff members reported that a verbal quarrel had broken out between family members who were visiting their mother at the facility. According to police, when they tried to remove the man identified as the aggressor, he resisted and began fighting with officers. He was arrested on a charge of obstructing a police officer. 

Lock your car doors

Four cases of theft from unlocked vehicles were reported throughout the past week. Taken from the vehicles were money, sunglasses, digital camera, GPS unit, cellphones and a wallet. Police remind residents to lock their vehicle doors.
