Lions and Tigers and Thefts, Oh My!

Minivans parked in the Detroit Zoo parking structure were targeted for valuables on June 1.

Chrysler minivans were the target of a series of break-ins June 1 in the  parking structure.

Among the items taken from seven minivans were in-dash DVD/stereo systems, GPS units and laptop computers, according to reports.

"All the larcenies from automobiles took place during the same time period," Deputy Chief Gordie Young said.

The thief or thieves punched a hole under the door handle to manipulate the locks of the vehicles.

Calls to the Detroit Zoo for comment were not immediately returned.

More thefts from vehicles

In another series of break-ins, six vehicles at four addresses in the 700 block of South Laurel were targeted June 2. Owners reported sunglasses, cash, jewelry and other items taken.

Also reported:

  • 1400 block of Chesapeake, May 31: A man reported the theft of all four tires from his 2012 Jeep Laredo.
  • 1500 block of Maryland Club Drive, May 31:  A man reported the theft of all four tires from his 2012 Chevrolet Malibu.
  • 100 block of South Maple, June 2: A woman reported someone entered her unlocked vehicle and stole her Garmin GPS unit and an undisclosed amount of money.
