UPDATE: Man Arrested After Breaking Into Royal Oak Church

Citizen alerted police to man scaling a metal pipe to get into the building, police said.

Update: Today, Paul Edward Murray was arraigned by Judge Derek Meinecke at the 44th District Court for unlawful entry with $5,000 cash or surety bond. A pretrial date will be set for a later date.

April 29, 3:22 p.m.: A man was arrested at a Royal Oak church on Monday morning after a witness noticed the man scaling a metal pipe behind the building.

Around 5:53 a.m. Monday, a citizen reported seeing a man climbing up a metal pipe at the rear of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 814 N. Campbell, to gain access into the building, said Royal Oak Police Sgt. Al Carter.

Officers arrived and set up around the perimeter of the building. The Royal Oak Fire Department responded and provided a ladder for officers to search the roof top. The Southfield Police K-9 unit also assisted because Royal Oak's police dog was unavailable at that time.

The dog, Harley, found the man hiding in a storage area in the basement of the church, Carter said. He was arrested without incident for breaking and entering.

The suspect, a 45-year-old Royal Oak resident, will be arraigned sometime Tuesday, Carter said.

"It was a great catch all the way around," he said.

Last week, Shelby Township police arrested three men who were allegedly involved in a "sophisticated" series of church and business robberies in Macomb County.
