What happened to the Shepherd mix? Were the owners issued a violation?
Kristen April 13, 2012 at 10:08 pm
Nearly every week the police blotter reports incidents that take place at LA Fitness. I don't understand why more isn't being done to stop the crime there. If LA Fitness isn't taking steps to keep their customer's safe, shouldn't the city step in? What are the police doing? This is the kind of thing that impacts insurance rates and property values.

Once again LA fitness headlines the crime in Royal Oak. When is somebody from the city going to step in and hold them responsible for what they're doing to the city of Royal Oak?

Once again LA fitness headlines the crime in Royal Oak. When are they going to held accountable for all the crime that is now being brought into Royal Oak?
Ronald Wolf April 14, 2012 at 06:49 am
The city seems to find the resources to handle Arts Beats and Eats, The Dream Cruise. St. Patricks and now every night motorcycle night. Maybe that easy exit should be closed. Its the city that needs to put its foot down with LA Fitness not the Royal Oak Police.

That shepherd pit bull mix destroyed a beloved pet. It needs to be destroyed. What if it was a small child that was attacked. In any case how does the owner of the smaller dog receive restitution. Only a violation? Is this a canine version of the Zimmerman incident?
Pasternak April 14, 2012 at 01:07 pm
Agree with the idea that people need to use some common sense and not leave purses and valuables in the passenger compartment of their vehicle. Disagree with the kool-aid drinkers who think that the police department can't possibly be expected to solve or prevent any crimes because they have no budget. Get real! There are a lot of police officers!

Zack, I'm not attacking the city and its police department. I am attacking LA fitness and the clientele it's bringing into Royal Oak. It's not just cars being broken into their fights inside, Lockers been broken into theft is rampant there. Where else is this happening in Royal Oak? I've lived in the condos across the street for six years and I've had no problems whatsoever with cars being broken into with all the on street parking. Now since LA fitness it's happening over in the condos .

LA fitness needs to shutdown the basketball court. That's what is attracting thugs.

Hi Ronald,
We didn't demand the other dog be destroyed, the owner took it upon himself to do that. On restitution, I can't put a price on my Molly girl. It just wouldn't feel right accepting money for something that was invaluable. She was priceless. I understand your frustration and I appreciate your support. -Mike

Yes, they got a violation and the owner of the dog had it destroyed. My wife feels awful about that now too. She felt two tragedies could have been avoided but the owner of the Shepherd made that decision.
Ronald Wolf April 15, 2012 at 01:32 am
Mike, first my condolences on your family's loss of Molly girl. When I used the word "restitution" I did not mean money as that is not possible. I just find it obcene that the city should make a profit from a violation issued to the owner of the Shepherd-pit bull mix and that is all. You are somewhat fortunate the dog's owner felt your pain and did what had to be done without direction from a court of law insensitive to the loss of a beloved pet and a part of your family. This is a can of worms but owners of known agressive breeds and mixed breeds traitionally bred for protection, and/ or fighting, without exception, should be required to pass a course and receive a permit to own to benefit the humane society. Handguns are not inherently agressive but their owners can be. That is why handgun owners are required to obtain permits. This type of incident occurs too often and sometimes the victims are children.
Ronald Wolf April 15, 2012 at 01:43 am
The first four words are correct. The city needs to value the safety of its citizens and the protection of their property over any taxes, or other benefits received. RO can easily put pressure on the owners to obtain security.It should begin with the mayor.
DMC children's hospital promises surveilance and security before it is even built. Who dropped the ball with LA fitness?
hansenmicael@comcast.net April 15, 2012 at 02:06 pm
Ya, I hear you. The city will make money off of this tragedy and I guess its a bit of punishment for the owner of the offending animal. I just hope others take heed and not take it for granted that your pet is safe in your own backyard yard if there are dogs roaming the neighborhood. That is the nightmare we relive. That's what drives us crazy every waking moment. I did drive out to Grand Rapids and I did buy my wife another chiwawa. The new puppy is filling a small gap but every corner of this house reminds us of Molly girl. Thanks for talking!

@zach johnson
BAM!!! You hit that nail right on its head...very well spoken. I'm guessing that alot of the people who expect the "city to step in" are the same hypocrites who will vote against a property tax increase to provide additional funds to increase public safety. If kicking in a couple of extra bucks to ensure more police officers are on the streets makes me a kool-aid drinker, then pass me an Ecto Cooler because I'm drinking that up.
Tim April 16, 2012 at 03:06 am
@jeff
I'm more comfortable if you just come right out and make your racism clear...by "thugs", I think its safe to assume you're referring "black people".
Ronald Wolf April 17, 2012 at 04:46 pm
In defense of Jeff the term "thug" has been around a long time. It was not until the term "thug culture" which began to be promulgated by cop hating rap groups such as NWA did that association begin. Many African- Americans are fed up with this association just as Italian Americans expressed concern with thier heritage constantly associated with Mafia in film. I am fed up with all groups that think theirs don't stink and its the fault of this race or that race. Religion has nothing to do with race and is today the major source of world conflict. Hate is a game we all play. LA Fitness has a problem with "thugs" and most of their victims are not "us".

Must be a bunch of wimps that live and play in R.O. If my dog were attacked by a neighbor's dog, that dog would be shot dead.l As far as fights at LA Fitness, you fight, your expelled, without a refund.
Ronald Wolf May 28, 2012 at 04:52 am
Big Truth how about taking a break this weekend to thank the vets for the freedom they gave all of us to shoot our mouths off.
Big Truth May 28, 2012 at 09:14 am
Today's young vets signed on mostly for the money, in a bad Obama economy, despite the dangers of helping people who only want your food and money then will stab you in the back as soon as you're not looking. The only vets that truly sacrificed for their country have all been gone for at least 70 years.

I took Michelle's couch to 5K class. It was awesome. More than 40 runners competed in their first 5KRead More race Sunday in Royal Oak. Woot!
