Police Blotter: Suspect Arrested in Break-Ins, Loaded Gun Found, Man Fires Glock While Cleaning

The following information was supplied by the Royal Oak Police Department. Arrests or charges do not indicate a conviction.

The following Royal Oak Police reports are from the week of Aug. 12-18:

Man Admits to Break-ins

In the month of July and early August, Royal Oak experienced a rash of break-ins. After compiling evidence from each crime scene, Royal Oak detectives determined a person of interest and began surveillance of the man they believed was responsible for as many as seven break-ins, according to the Royal Oak Police Department. 

On Aug. 7 at 1:30 a.m. the surveillance team arrested a man as he exited a business he had allegedly just broken into in Madison Heights, police said. The man was taken into custody and charged with breaking and entering.

Royal Oak detectives interviewed the man regarding seven break-ins in Royal Oak, and he admitted to Royal Oak detectives that he committed five of them. 

Warrants have been obtained, but the man had not been arraigned yet as of Thursday afternoon

Restaurants Broken Into

  • , 1307 E. 11 Mile, Aug. 13: The business reported that someone smashed a window, entered the business and stole an undisclosed amount of cash.  
  • , 1304 E. 11 Mile Rd., Aug. 13: The business reported that someone smashed out the side entry door in an attempt to enter the building. The suspect was not able to get inside. 

Homes Invaded

  • 1100 block of N. Campbell, Aug. 11:  A man reported that someone pried open a window and entered his home. The suspect stole numerous items including laptops and cameras.  
  • 4100 block of Cooper, Aug. 12:  A man reported someone stole collectible coins and other collectable items from his home.  

Cars stolen

  • 100 block of Normandy, Aug. 12: A man reported that someone stole his 1999 black Honda Civic. 
  • Ravena and Woodward Avenue, Aug. 17: A man reported that someone stole his 1967 blue Camaro. 

Items Stolen from Cars

  • 3000 block of N. Altadena, Aug. 12:  A woman reported that someone entered her unlocked vehicle and stole approximately 100 CD’s. 
  • 2900 block of N. Altadena, Aug. 12:  A man reported that someone entered his unlocked vehicle and stole a Garmin portable GPS unit and a pair of shoes. 
  • 4800 block of Briarwood, Aug. 12: A man reported that someone used a pry bar to pry open his vehicle. The man's laptop computer and a backpack were stolen. 
  • 3100 block of N. Alexander, Aug. 11: A man reported that someone entered his vehicle and stole miscellaneous electric tools. 

Police Arrest Man Suspected of Stealing from Cars

1100 block of East Lincoln, Aug. 12: A man called the police after he had watched another man enter two vehicles. Upon arrival the officers located the man who was walking away from the area.  He was found to be in possession of a stolen watch, cell phone, CD’s and sunglasses. Royal Oak officers determined which property belonged to two unlocked vehicles and arrested the suspect for two counts of larceny of an automobile. 

Cars Keyed

  • 3200 block of Albert, Aug. 11: A man reported that someone keyed the driver’s side door while it was parked on the street in front of his residence.  
  • 5150 Coolidge, Aug. 11: A woman reported that someone keyed her driver’s side door and fender.  

Man Fires Glock Accidentally, He Says

4100 block of Rochester, Aug. 12: A man reported that a bullet shattered the front window of his home. Royal Oak officers arrived on scene and noticed a man across the street working on the window of his home. The man quickly went into the home when he saw the officers arrive. The officers questioned the man and discovered that he had accidently discharged a handgun while inside his home. The bullet traveled through his window and into the home across the street. The male stated that he was preparing his 9mm Glock for cleaning and he accidently discharged a round. Nobody was injured at either home. 

Police Find Loaded Handgun in Car

27000 block of Woodward Avenue, Aug. 11: Royal Oak officers located what they said was a suspicious vehicle parked on Woodward. Upon further investigation, the officer found the vehicle was unoccupied and a loaded .45 caliber handgun was sitting on the rear passenger seat. Royal Oak officers impounded the vehicle and confiscated the firearm. 

Other Incidents

  • 3601 W. 13 Mile Rd., Aug. 11: A man reported that someone stole the center caps from all four of his vehicle tires.  
  • Walton Wood Manor, 3450 W. 13 Mile, Aug. 12:  A man reported he had an undisclosed amount of money stolen from his room. A second resident also reported she had a ring taken from her room. 
  • 3300 block of Ellwood, Aug. 13: A man reported that someone threw eggs at his vehicle causing damage to the paint. 
  • 4623 block of Crooks, Aug. 16: A man reported that three male teens stole his light green Next Chaos BMX bike. 
  • 200 block of North Main, Aug. 17: A man reported that someone stole the license plate from his vehicle.
