Royal Oak Police Respond to Nearly 50 Fireworks Complaints

Since July 1, Royal Oak Police officers have responded to 49 resident complaints about fireworks, coming from all around the city.

Anyone shooting off fireworks before July 3 or after July 5 was breaking state and local laws. Consumer fireworks can only be used on New Year's Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas, along with the days before and after each holiday.

The Royal Oak City Commission will be considering a revision to the ordinance to further limit the use of fireworks to the hours between 8 a.m. and midnight on the days when their use is not already prohibited, according to a city media statement.

Last year, police responded to 32 calls between July 1 and July 7, according to Lt. Dave Clemens of the Royal Oak Police Department.
