Series of Auto Break-Ins Reported at LA Fitness

Management and police are urging patrons to lock their belongings out of sight.

Members of  are being urged to be cautious with their belongings in the wake of a half-dozen break-ins and thefts from vehicles in the Royal Oak fitness center's parking lots.

In the most recent weekly crime update, it listed a series of car windows broken and items taken from automobiles at on Woodward Avenue near Interstate 696.

“We are posting warnings in all the locker rooms to lock things up,” said Jamie Allard, acting operations manager. Allard said other managers have seen people go into the parking lot, break windows, grab what they want and then jump onto I-696.

LA Fitness is also distributing fliers from the front desk asking patrons to be aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious activity.

There seems to be no pattern to the break-ins, according to Royal Oak Police Sgt. Mike Frazier, which occurred at different hours of the day in the parking lot on the south side of the building and the parking area beneath the building.

“The best thing you can do is lock any personal belongings in the trunk of your car, out of sight, before you enter the gym,” Frazier said. Always lock the doors of your vehicle, too.

The following thefts were reported at LA Fitness from Nov. 25-Dec. 1:

  • Nov. 25: A man reported that someone broke the rear window of his vehicle and stole his iPhone.  
  • Nov. 25: A man reported that someone broke the rear window of his vehicle and stole a duffle bag containing an iPod Touch.  
  • Nov. 28: A woman reported that someone stole her 2001 Chrysler Concorde from the parking lot.
  • Nov. 30: A woman reported that someone broke the driver’s side window ofher vehicle and stole credit cards and an undisclosed amount of cash. 
  • Nov. 30: A woman reported that someone entered her unlocked vehicle and stole her wallet and an undisclosed amount of cash. 
  • Dec. 1: A woman reported that someone broke the rear window of her vehicle and stole her purse.
