Suspects Face More Home Invasion, Stolen Property Charges

Scott Overfield and Jessica Squarcia of Southfield were brought up on additional charges in court Friday.

Suspects  and  of Southfield face additional charges related to recent home invasions and stolen property in Royal Oak.

Overfield and Squarcia were in court Friday for preliminary exams on respectively at the  when the additional charges came down.

Squarcia’s attorney Starla D. Zehr noted that her client wanted to waive her preliminary exam and move directly to the Oakland County Circuit Court. Her wish was granted. Soon after, Squarcia, 22, stood to hear her rights and the new counts added, including two counts of concealing stolen property. One is a felony for receiving and concealing items worth $1,000 or more but less than $20,000 and the second count is a misdemeanor for receiving and concealing items worth $200 or more but less than $1,000. The charges stem from incidents on or about May 16 and May 28 respectively. Recovered stolen items included in the felony charge include an Apple Macbook laptop computer, DVDs and a guitar.

Overfield, 20, was arraigned Friday morning on six new counts, including four second-degree home invasion felonies, one attempted home invasion of the first degree and a misdemeanor for receiving and concealing stolen property, sharing the same charge with Squarcia. The charges stem from home invasions reported in Royal Oak at 4312 W. 13 Mile Rd., 4316 W. 13 Mile Rd. and 3211 Prairie  between May 8 and May 25.

Squarcia is scheduled to appear at 44th District Court on June 17 and Overfield on June 22 at 1:30 p.m. for pre-exam conferences on their latest charges.

As a result of the new information, Judge Terrence Brennan decided to set Overfield’s bond at $100,000, on top of the $10,000 already in place, due to what the judge called his danger to society.

During Squarcia’s arraignment, Royal Oak Detective Kevin Spencer noted Squarcia has no criminal history and suggested a continuance of her bond would suffice. Brennan agreed to maintain the $10,000 personal bond with the condition she has no contact with the co-defendant.

Royal Oak resident Angelita Coronado was in court Friday and testified during Overfield’s preliminary exam that she had property stolen from her residence on Cummings Road, including backpacks, a purse, flat screen TV, Xbox and more. She noted she had never heard of Overfield prior to the arrest. Spencer also testified, stating Overfield suggested to him that he and Devone Winbush, 21-year-old of Southfield also charged with home invasion, had in fact broke into Coronado's home and stolen a series of items.

Though Spencer did not wish to comment to Patch about the home invasion cases, he noted about the Royal Oak Police Department: “Even though we are short handed, we are trying to keep the community safe and I think our officers are doing a great job.”
