‘Twasn’t’ Us, Royal Oak Police Say of Tweet About Pot

For the record, the Royal Oak Police Department doesn’t have a Twitter account.

So it wasn’t local authorities who warned, “We know who you are and we are going to watch you” after a Tweet was sent out under a fake police department Twitter account in response to a post about medical marijuana.

The bogus Tweet went out last week, the Royal Oak Daily Tribune reports. Police Lt. Dave Clemens said authorities learned about the situation from a reporter, contacted Twitter and asked that the account be suspended.

Police think the account was set up sometime around March 8. Most Tweets sent from the fake account concerned stories of general interest, but a March 24 Tweet that had been favorited included a picture of a marijuana bud.

Clemens said investigators are working to determine the identity of the person who set up the fake account, though he admitted tracing it “will be complicated.”

“We’ll have to get records from Twitter,” he told the newspaper. “If we identify who was behind it, we don’t know at this point whether there will be charges or not.”
