UPDATE: 19-Year-Old Confesses to Royal Oak Home Invasion Robbery

A 19-year man confessed to breaking into two Royal Oak homes and an unattached garage in the 1000 block of Iroquois Boulevard last week, according to police.

Zachary Michael Deming faces two counts of first-degree home invasion, two counts of firearm in the commission of a felony, breaking and entering with intent, receiving and concealing a firearm and resisting and obstructing a police officer. He was arraigned in 44th Discrict Court before Judge Terrence Brennan with a cash surety bond set at $500,000.

Deming was interviewed by Royal Oak detectives after he was arrested by Troy police on Wednesday. Deming led Troy officers on an hour-long foot pursuit through a wooded area sometime after 6 a.m. July 10. At one point he escaped by swimming across a swollen creek, according to Troy police.

Troy officers finally apprehended Deming, who was hiding under a deck, in the 6000 block of Pineway near Crooks and W. Square Lake roads in Troy. He was taken into custody without further incident and charged with two counts of first-degree home invasion.

Police noted Deming matched the description of a man that got away from Royal Oak officers last week.

On July 4, a resident returning home from work in the 1000 block of Iroquois at about 3 a.m. heard someone walking around the second floor of his home and went across the street to call police.

A man was spotted coming out the front door as officers were securing the exterior of the residence. The man ran away when he was confronted by police.

Police say Deming confessed to breaking into the Iroquois home.

Royal Oak officers were able to recover the resident's stolen property and a handgun stolen from a vehicle July 3 in Rochester Hills, police said.

Deming's preliminary exam is set for 9 a.m. July 19 in Royal Oak.
