A Warren man who allegedly attempted to steal tools from a downtown Royal Oak construction site was apprehended by Royal Oak police on July 12 after officers found him pushing a garbage can near Lafayette and Ninth Street at approximately 8 p.m.
According to Royal Oak police, Timothy Haystead, 47, of Warren, was intoxicated and could not explain why he was pushing a garbage can filled with a number of expensive tools.
After arresting Haystead for public intoxication, officers discovered a business under construction in the former Dobie Jeweler’s building at 500 S. Washington was robbed.

Police say Haystead kicked through the dry wall to enter the building. After being interviewed by a Royal Oak detective, Haystead confessed to taking the tools, according to police.
Haystead, who has a lengthy criminal record, faces a charge of breaking and entering with intent. Magistrate Judith A. Holtz arraigned him in Oakland County Circuit Court. A $25,000 bond was issued. Haystead’s next court date is to be determined.
