Woman Faces OWI After Crashing Into Pole on Main Street

Alcohol may have been a factor in weekend crash.

A woman faces a drunken driving offense after police say she crashed into a pole near George & Daughter Hair Port in the 1100 block of South Main Street just after midnight Saturday.

The woman, who was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, was ticketed for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, according to Lt. David Clemens of the Royal Oak Police.

"The incident is still under investigation," Clemens said.

Witnesses say the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed when she lost control of her vehicle on Main Street near Harrison Avenue. A male companion was unharmed in the single-car incident. The couple may have been arguing, according to a witness.

The incident downed a wooden pole, which supported guy-wires for a pair of signal heads, causing the traffic lights to dangle near to the ground and force the closing of Main Street all day Saturday and much of the day on Sunday.

DTE Energy crews arrived Sunday at about 4:30 p.m. to replace the pole. Main Street was reopened approximately two hours later.
