1 City Votes in 3 School District Elections

When Royal Oak residents go to the polls Nov. 8, they will vote for Board of Education candidates in three different areas.

In two weeks, Royal Oak residents will elect three and a mayor as well as determine the fate of four charter amendments. Voters also will elect school board members in one of three school districts – the candidates appearing on the ballot depend on where you reside in the Royal Oak.

Berkley School District

In Precinct 1, 294 Royal Oak residents are registered to vote in the Berkley School District. Precinct 1 is the area of Royal Oak west of Woodward and north of the Detroit Zoo.

School board Vice President Paul Ellison, Paul Honkala and Ronald Justice are running to fill two six-year terms. Board of Education President Marc Katz .

Mitchell Moses, an interim board member by appointment, and Melissa Lampela are running to fill one partial term ending Dec. 31, 2015. The Board of Education in July appointed Moses to fill a seat vacated by Trustee Ryan O'Gorman, whose family moved out of the district. Lampela was not among those who challenged Moses for the appointment. Moses will serve until Dec. 31

Clawson School District

Precinct 25 has 127 Royal Oak residents registered to vote in the Clawson School District.

Precinct 25 is the area of Royal Oak north of 14 Mile Road and south of Meijer Drive, between Coolidge Highway and Crooks Road.

In the Clawson School District, there is one open seat but no candidates are on the ballot. as a candidate.

Royal Oak School District

All other precincts (2-24 and the portion of Precinct 1 east of Woodward) vote for school board members in the Royal Oak school district. Voters will be asked to elect two members. As of Tuesday morning, current board members Lisa L. Bradford and Gary W. Briggs are on the ballot running unopposed.

Bradford has been a trustee on the board for four years and has served on the finance and curriculum committees.

Briggs has served on the board for seven years. He is board president and has served on the finance, building and site and mural restoration committees.
