5 Things to Know this Week: Presidents Day, City Commission Meets, Fundraisers, More

We've got meetings, fundraisers and more going on in Royal Oak.

There's always a lot going on in Royal Oak. Here are some highlights this week:

  1. Presidents Day on Monday: Monday is Presidents Day, so there will be no mail delivery, and most banks will be closed. City Hall and the Royal Oak Public Library will remain open, and trash pickup is not affected. The federal holiday celebrates the birthday of George Washington, first president of the United States, who was born Feb. 22. The holiday has become synonymous with sales throughout the years, so if you are off work, it might be a good day to go shopping.
  2. City Commission meets Monday: The City Commission meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall. Click here for the agenda.
  3. Fundraisers on Fat Tuesday: There are two fundraisers Tuesday. The Royal Oak Women's Club will host its seventh annual Fat Tuesday all-day fundraiser to support the Royal Oak Schools’ project "Blessings in a Backpack" at Pronto! for breakfast, lunch, dinner and even carryout. Visit the Woman's Club at royaloakwomansclub.org.

The Royal Oak Restaurant Association (RORA) will also be celebrating with its annual Mardi Gras Festival on Tuesday. The proceeds will benefit the Royal Oak Community Farm. Tickets will be available for $10 at 17 different venues. The event starts at 6 p.m. For a listing of venues and entertainment, visit RORA at rorainfo.com.
  4. Maleena Hill fundraiser Friday: Maleena Hill, daughter of Royal Oak High School varsity football head coach Jeff Hill, was born Nov. 13, 2011. At 6 weeks old, she was diagnosed with leukemia and began treatment the next day. A fundraiser to help the Hill family with medical expenses will be held from 6 p.m.-midnight at DeCarlo's Banquet Center. Tickets for the fundraiser cost $50 per person in advance and $75 at the door. The evening will include dinner, a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle with all proceeds going to the Maleena Hill Leukemia Fund. DeCarlo's Banquet Center is located at 6015 E. 10 Mile Rd. in Warren.
  5. Youth Assistance Bowl-A-Thon on Saturday: The 30th annual Royal Oak Youth Assistance Bowl-A-Thon from noon-4 p.m. Sunday at Thunderbird Lanes in Troy. This event raises funds for a variety of programs, including skill building and summer camp scholarships, Mentors PLUS and Family Education and Youth recognition day. For more information about the Bowl-A-Thon, contact Royal Oak Youth Assistance at 248-546-8282 or visit bowlathon.net to sign up.
