Be WinterWise With Help From the MPSC

The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) encourages utility consumers to “Be WinterWise” and take steps now to reduce bills and getting on available payment plans to avoid shut-offs. The MPSC has set up a website designed to be a useful resource to cover a variety of programs that can help keep the heat on this winter. The information can be found atwww.michigan.gov/bewinterwise.

The Be WinterWise website includes information on:

  • Low-cost ways to reduce energy usage
  • Energy Assistance Programs designed to prevent shut-offs, including:
    • Winter Protection Plans for senior citizens and low-income customers
    • State Emergency Relief
    • Medical emergency shut-off protection
    • Shut-off protection for active duty military personnel or their spouse
  • Home Heating Credit
  • Weatherization Assistance Program
  • Lifeline and Link-Up discount telephone service program for low income customers
  • Earned Income credit

It also includes the Energy Assistance Directory which was developed by the Coalition to Keep Michigan Warm. This provides information on public and private programs and lists utility companies, programs and resources by county.
