City Commission Says 'Si' to Margaritas and Mariachis

Special event permits are approved for three Cinco de Mayo celebrations in Royal Oak.

Monday night, approved special event permits for, and The Social Connection. All three plan to hold Cinco de Mayo celebrations in Royal Oak.

Cinco de Mayo commemorates the victory of the Mexican militia over the French army in 1862.

Uno: Camelia’s Authentic Mexican Grill

11 a.m. – 10 p.m. May 4 -5; 11 a.m. – 10 p.m. May 6

Camelia’s will set up two small tents with tables and seating for 20 on the northeast corner of the restaurant, giving patrons the opportunity to enjoy outdoor dining and beverages at its Cinco de Mayo celebration. Strolling mariachis will perform both inside Camelia’s Mexican Grill as well as outside.

Dos: Tequila Blue

5 p.m. – midnight May 4; noon – midnight May 5

Tequila Blue will fence off the parking lot located at the corner of Sixth Street and Center Street and set up a large tent for its Cinco de Mayo celebration. A nominal fee to enter the family event will be collected. Organizers plan to have a pig roast, strolling mariachis, painting and piñatas for children, salsa lessons and music featuring salsa, samba, rock and jazz bands. The bands will end at 10 p.m. each night.

Tequila Blue will donate 15 percent of all proceeds from the Cinco de Mayo Celebration to the Royal Oak ROOTS Foundation.

Tres: The Social Connection

3 p.m. – 11 p.m. May 5

The Social Connection will host the Cinco de Mayo Bash with the Metro Times. This charity fundraiser for the American Red Cross will take place both inside and outside of the . A large tent will be erected in the west lot to provide a covered area for seating and dining. Mobile food trucks will provide food. Planned festivities include a burrito eating contest and salsa dance lessons. Tickets to the event will be sold on-line.
