Group Gathers in Royal Oak to Protest Action in Syria

Demonstrators say they oppose a military strike against Syria.

A group of demonstrators gathered Monday at the intersection of Woodward Avenue and 12 Mile Road to voice opposition against any military intervention in Syria.

The vigil, which began at 7 p.m. Monday, is part of a campaign by progressive groups around the country, such as MoveOn.org, to oppose a strike against Syria in response to use of chemical weapons on its own citizens.

“We want to make people aware that we stand with the people of Syria and we stand for peace," said organizer Tom Zerafa, of Oak Park.

Zerafa fears drone strikes will not resolve tensions but rather escalate hatred of Americans.

"Drone strikes more often than not miss the target and hit the innocent," Zerafa said.

The group received limited permission from the National Shrine of the Little Flower Catholic Church to use the school's parking lot for demonstrators that have difficulty walking long distances, according to Zerafa.
